THE PROBLEM
Regardless of your personal goals for weight training, you should always aim to progressively advance your exercise routines. This is commonly referred to as "progressive overload" and can be achieved by increasing time under tension (slowing down the movement), increasing your control over the movement, and most commonly, increasing the weight and/or reps per set. Trying to progressively overload an exercise is fundamental to progress with your workout plans. It means that you are learning how to adapt to a stimulus and then push to the next level to keep your gains coming.
But, quite often, we get stuck at a point for too long without advancing. Below are the most likely reasons:
-
Inadequate rest time to allow for muscle recovery.
-
Improper diet - e.g., not enough protein intake,
-
Not knowing when to switch up - i.e. change exercises, change angles, change weights, switching a program or a split
WHAT CAUSES WEIGHT TRAINING STANDSTILL?
While sleep, diet and other factors may be lifestyle changes, not knowing when to switch it up is a big blocker to advancing in weight training workouts. Tracking lifts and following a set program is an incredibly useful gym habit that you can develop easily and greatly increase the efficiency of your workout routines. Having a target number of reps or weight to beat session after session strongly motivates you to push closer to failure, encouraging muscle growth.
Tracking your lifts is also beneficial in keeping you aware of your progress and consequently indicating whether you require a change of training workout program. Because, if you keep repeating the same exercises every time you go to the gym and do not progress, then introducing new ways to challenge the muscles is essential to your full-body fitness.
